When a stone is finely cut, it becomes a rare gem, and when a child is trained to a high standard, it becomes the messiah of suffering humanity.  A bright example of service to humanity, Abdul Sattar Edhi also entered into practical life after receiving high training from the great mother, that his mother gave Abdul Sattar Edhi a penny a day for food and a penny to help another person.  This is the reason why Abdus Sattar Edhi kept away from color and devoted himself to the fulfillment of the great mission of service to humanity all his life.  Edhi did not receive formal education, not even high school, but he used to say that the sorrows of the world were his teacher and source of wisdom. In 1951, he opened a small clinic in his personal shop with the help of a doctor.  A friend of his helped him in this work, with the money he received from this friend, he bought a vehicle worth two thousand rupees, built a dispensary and established a four-bed hospital inside a tent.  Edhi would go round the city in his ambulance throughout the day and whenever he saw a needy or injured person, he would immediately take him to the aid station.  The formal Edhi Foundation was started in 1957 when a large-scale flu epidemic broke out in Karachi and on this occasion Edhi Sahib set up free medical camps in the vicinity of Karachi with the help of philanthropists.  Impressed by his work, philanthropists donated him a large sum of money, which he faithfully used to buy the entire building where the dispensary was located.  In the same building, he established a maternity hospital and a training institute for nurses.  It was there that he met Nurse Bilqis, whom he married in 1965, and had two sons and two daughters.  His organization, which started its welfare work from this small house, is now one of the largest non-state welfare organizations in South Asia.  He served selflessly and devoted his entire life to this work.
